Part 7 of the Education Act 2015, pertaining to non-government schools, is being reviewed to determine whether the policy underlying it remains appropriate.

Non-government schools are a valuable part of the Northern Territory education system. The sector reflects the diversity of our community and enables families to have increased choice in the education their child receives.

A discussion paper has been prepared to guide consideration of potential reform areas. Six areas have been identified as a focus for potential reform. These are:

A. Child safety, wellbeing and behaviour management

B. Viability and financial reporting

C. Registration

D. Assessment and review

E. Decision-making and review

F. Complaints and special investigation

This paper particularly highlights opportunities to bring NT legislation in line with other jurisdictions.

The review provides an opportunity to identify areas for reform or improvement. The department values feedback on potential reforms from non-government school communities and other stakeholders.

Feedback from the discussion paper will be used to shape future legislative amendments.

Responses to this discussion paper are due by 15 October 2021.
