The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade is seeking feedback on the draft Northern Territory Minerals Industry Plan – Pathway to 2030. The Plan articulates the Northern Territory (NT) Government’s vision for the minerals industry and provides a roadmap to guide policy approaches to strategically drive development of the NT minerals industry, including downstream minerals processing.

Background

The Northern Territory Minerals Industry Plan - Pathway to 2030 builds on the work of the Mineral Development Taskforce. The Taskforce released their Final Report in late 2022 with recommendations to boost sector growth and attract investment, enabling a strong contribution to the NT Government’s vision of a $40 billion economy by 2030. Following further stakeholder consultation in 2023, the NT Government endorsed the Taskforce Final Report.

The Minerals Industry Development (MID) team within the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade will oversee delivery of the recommendations, which are expected to continue to 2026.

About the Draft Northern Territory Minerals Industry Plan – Pathway to 2030

The Plan has been developed pursuant to the Taskforce recommendation aimed at securing a pipeline of new mines to facilitate achievement of a $40 billion economy by 2030.

The Plan outlines the NT Government’s commitment to minerals industry development and maps activities necessary for the minerals sector to continue achieving sustainable sectoral growth and diversification.

The mining industry plays a fundamental role in the world’s transition to net zero emissions and a technological enabled future, and the Territory has the mineral resources to assist with this transformation process. The Plan seeks to secure a competitive investment environment, allowing the Territory to unlock its minerals potential, growing the mineral industry and providing enduring benefits and opportunities for all Territorians.

Successful implementation of the Plan is expected to not only position the Territory to achieve its $40 billion economic target but will also support delivery of social outcomes, and economic self-determination for Aboriginal Territorians. However, achieving targeted outcomes will be highly dependent on effective collaboration and cooperation between the NT and Australian Governments, industry, land councils, and other key stakeholders.
